MCMULLEN, Edward S.
|Cambria Freeman, 14February1896, Contributed by Lisa Baker|
|Edward S. McMullen, a brakeman employed on the Pittsburg division, residing in Altoona, was instantly killed in the Gallitzin tunnel about 3:30 on Friday afternoon. The body was not found until about 7:30 Friday evening. |
It is thought McMullen fell from his train while it was passing through the tunnel, though it is not known at exactly what time the accident occurred. He must have fallen between the bumbers, for the body, when found, showed that the wheels had passed over the chest and both arms. Death under these circumstances, was instantaneous.
The remains were picked and conveyed to Gallitzin where they were prepared for burial. The body was then taken to Altoona to Mrs. J. J. Irvin, a sister of the deceased.
Edward McMullen was born at Chest Springs and was about 24 years of age. He leaves a wife to whom he was recently married at Pitcairn. His father is also yet living, beside the sister, Mrs. J. J. Irvin, with whom he boarded. The deceased was a member of the Pennsylvania Railroad Relief Fund in the second class.
