John V. Overberger, 84, former Hastings Borough Councilman, died on Monday, Dec. 23, at Cambria County Home, Ebensburg.

Mr. Overberger was a retired blacksmith of the Rich Hill Coal Co., Hastings.

Mr. Overberger was born on Jan. 22, 1879, in Hastings, a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Hoover) Overberger. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Margaret Carl, in 1945.

He is survived by these children--Herman, Mrs. Alma Owens and Mrs. Martha Holtz, all of Hastings; Mrs. Cora Finley, Brockton, Mass.; Mrs. Loretta Fagan, Euclid, Ohio; Mrs. Grace Shutty, Barnesboro, and Leo of Barnesboro, R.D. Also surviving are 21 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was a brother of Casper and Anthony, both of Hastings, and Mrs. Anna Lantzy of Denver, Colo.

The well-known Hastings man was a member of St. Bernard's Holy Name Society; Local Union 393, UMWA, Hastings, and for 20 years served as a member of the Borough Council. He also was a past president of the body.

Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m., this Friday in St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Hastings, by Rev. Father Dominic Breuss, OSB, with interment in the church cemetery.

Friends are being received at Easly and Easly Funeral Home in Hastings, where Rosary will be recited this evening by the ICBU at 7:00 p.m., and the Holy Name Society at 7:30 p.m.
