Dr. Charles E. Overberger, retired dentist and former bank president, died Friday, July 14, at Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg. He was 79.

Born in Patton, Oct. 13, 1887, he was a son of John B. and Helena (Huber) Overberger. He was married to the former Beatrice McAnulty, who survives, along with the following sons: Dr. Charles G., of Ann Arbor, Mich., president of the American Chemical Society (ASC); Dr. James E., a dentist in Chapel Hill, N.C., and William F., Morrisville, Pa. There are 11 grandchildren.

Dr. Overberger established his practice in Barnesboro in 1915 following his graduation from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry with highest honor. He retired in August 1958.

A director of the First National Bank of Barnesboro during 1927-50, Dr. Overberger became president of the bank in 1950 and held that position until 1965.

He served 18 years on the Barnesboro School Board and 12 years on the Cambria County Board of School Directors.

He also was a board member of the Department of Public Assistance when it was organized and had served as director of Miners Hospital, Spangler.

A veteran of World War I, he served as a first lieutenant in the Army Dental Corps and was a charter member of Vodzak Post 508, American Legion, Barnesboro. He also served as Democratic district chairman, was a charter member of St. Edward's Catholic Church, Barnesboro and was a fourth degree member and Past Grand Knight of Council 2277, Knights of Columbus, Barnesboro.

Friends were received at James J. Long Funeral Home, Barnesboro. Funeral Mass was held at 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Edward's Catholic Church, Barnesboro, by the Rev. Edward Davis. Interment was at St. Mary's Cemetery, Patton.
