DEMENTED MAN SLAYS HIS WIFE AND KILLS HIMSELF ON THE SECOND ATTEMPT
Latrobe, March 31. Lying side by side at a local undertakers here, the bodies of Joseph Howard and his wife, the latter murdered and the other, a suicide by shooting Saturday night, attracted crowds of morbidly curious until they were removed to the Howard home on Thompson Street Sunday afternoon. Howard is said to have been mentally unbalanced, following a recent illness.
It developed that Howard's double crime was not the man's first outbreak. Recently he is said to have attacked his wife with an ax. She ran into the house and locked the door. Howard, it is said, was battering down the door when neighbors over powered him.
Two sons, fourteen and sixteen years old, are left. Funeral services for Mrs. Howard will be held Tuesday at the Holy Family Catholic Church. On account of his suicide Howard could not be buried in the consecrated ground and the body was placed in charge of friends who interred it elsewhere.
