OTTO, Ruby

SOURCE NOTATION:
Cambria Freeman, 28 Oct 1904, Contributed by Patty Millich

Shot by Brother, Pindelton, Oct. 21 -- I'll shoot you," were the playful words uttered yesterday afternoon by William, the 7-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. William Otto of this place to his 12-year-old sister, Ruby, who now has died with a bullet hole through her head. The two children had been playing about the yard about two o'clock when the boy discovered the gun, a .32 caliber target rifle, which was lying in an unhitched wagon standing near the house and after playfully uttering the above words he pointed the gun at his sister. With a sharp report the gun was discharged and the bullet ploughed its way clear through the sister's head, having entered from the left side of the neck and came out near the right ear.

Dr. Mitchell was summoned from Twin Rocks at once, some distance from here, but he was unable to do anything to save the victim. Death resulted about three hours after the girl had been injured.

The gun that caused so much sorrow was owned by Henry McAllister, a 12-year-old grandson of William Campbell, who owns the farm on which the Otto family lives. The lad had been helping to husk corn and had placed the weapon, which he had brought with him from his home in the
morning, in the wagon where the Otto boy secured it.

The funeral took place Saturday after services in St. Nicolas' church, Nicktown, conducted by Rev. Father Rupert, the pastor.
