NAVY RECRUITERS SIGN 14 DISTRICT MEN FOR SERVICE
Local recruiters announced today that 14 district men have been accepted for duty in the navy. Four of them were enlisted through the branch office in Indiana. The new Navy men are:
Joseph P. Davis Jr., 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Davis of Portage R. D. 1. He graduated from Portage Twp. High School and was employed by the Keystone Farms Dairy, Ebensburg, prior to enlisting.
Arthur D. Martynuska, 18, son of Steven Martynuska of Lilly. He graduated form Lilly High School this year.
Edward F. Novatny, 19, so of Steven Novatny of Portage R. D. 1. A 1947 graduate of Portage Twp. High School, he was employed as a truck driver before he enlisted.
Philip J. Kapustka, 17, son of Mr. and Rms. Joseph Kapustka of Lilly. He attended Lilly High School and worked as a laborer.
John R. Orehowsky, 18, son of Frank Orehowsky of Lilly.
Joseph Branas, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Branas of 930* Caldwell Ave., Portage. he was graduated from Portage High School this spring.
Walter Lee McVicker, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Guy McVicker of 915 Gillespie Ave., Portage. He also was graduated from Portage High School this term.
Donald Francis Shaw, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Shaw of 1027 South Railroad St., Portage. He attended schools in Portage.
Frank Henry Ewel Jr., 17, son of Mr. and Mrs.. Frank Henry Ewel of 638 Linden Ave. He attended Hershey Industrial School, Cochran Junior High School and Johnstown High School.
Charles Boyd Kelly, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kelly of Saltsburg. He was graduated this spring from Saltsburg High School.
James Anthony Buggy, son of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Buggy of Chambersville. he was a student in Indiana High School.
Bernard Eugene Nussen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Nussen of Homer City. Prior to enlisting, he had been employed by the Armstrong construction Co., Kittanning.
Steve Shimko, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Shimko of Lucernemines. He had been employed in the Mahoning Supply Co. Store in Lucernemines.
Bernard Leslie Anderson, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Peter Anderson of Lucernemines. A former student at Indiana High School, he was employed in Indiana by the Indiana Countian.

Notice is hereby given that Nan L. Miller of 223 Union Street, Johnstown, Pennsylvania, has presented her petition to the Court of Common Pleas of Cambria County, Pennsylvania, praying for a certificate authorizing her to act as a fem sole trader. NINE SENTENCES HANDED OUT BY SOMERSET JURIST
SOMERSET -- Nine defendants received jail sentences when they appeared before Judge Norman T. Boose in Somerset County Court this morning.
Robert Mitchell and Irvin Miller, Addison Twp., received six months to one year leas a day in the Somerset County Jail for theft of chickens at the farm of John Merrill, near Ft. Hill. The two men also were ordered to pay the costs of prosecution and to make restitution.
Harvey and Donald Segar, Somerset R. D. 2, received a similar sentence when they entered pleas of guilty to stealing a motor vehicle in Somerset last Apr. 10. The young men admitted they took a car owned by Clark Weyand, Rockwood R. D. 1, form its parking place in Somerset and wrecked it near Jenners No. 2.
Damage to the vehicle was estimated at about $1,400, District Attorney Thomas F. Lansberry told the court. Judge Boose ordered the pair to pay the costs and to make restitution.
Columbus and Raymond Beeman, Somerset R. D. 5, received a jail sentence of form six months to a year less a day for the theft of household articles form the home of Anna Klink, Somerset R. D. 5. They also were ordered to pay costs and make restitution.
Judge Boose deferred sentence on Pete and Joe Tirko, Hooversville, until a third brother, Steve, is taken into custody. The Tirkos were convicted of assault and battery at the last term of court but Steve Tirko is a fugitive form justice. The two brothers were placed under $1,000 surety bond until the September term of court.
John Mitchell Pritts, Middlecreek Twp., convicted on a charge of driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicating liquor last month, was fined $200, ordered to pay costs and sentenced to six months in the county jail.
On an appeal form reckless driving charges filed before a justice of the peace, ward Kinsinger, Somerset, was found guilty. He was fined $10 and ordered to pay costs.
Ross Saylor, Somerset, was placed under a $1,000 surety bond when brought into court for surety of the peace.
Two Johnstown men were sentenced by Judge Boose on an assault and battery charge. George Koban was ordered to pay costs and a fine of $100. He was placed on parole for six months. Andrew Koban, his brother, was ordered to pay a $100 fine and costs.
