JOHNSTOWN DAILY TRIBUNE JOHNSTOWN, PA 1928   Monday, 16 January 1928 Submitted by Lynne Canterbury P. JAMES McGOUGH OBSERVES BIRTHDAY. Paredes James McGough, one of the oldest resident of this community, celebrated his 80th birthday anniversary on Saturday. He is enjoying good health. He was born Jan. 14, 1848, in a one-story log house along the Old Portage railroad. This building was known as the "half-way house" and was used by the late William and George Murray as a store. P. J. McGough was baptized at Wilmore, then called Jefferson, by Father Tobias Mullen, later Bishop of Erie. Father Mullen and Mrs. Hugh Dugan were the Godparents of Paredes McGough. He was baptized in the old stone church, razed some years ago to make way for the present structure. Mr. McGough is the father of 11 children, nine of whom are living. He was a box maker and carpenter by trade and followed this occupation in Johnstown for years. Some years ago while engaged in making boxes at the Goenner brewery in Johnstown, Mr. McGough lost several fingers of the right hand when the member was caught in a band saw. MICHAEL ZELAK. Michael Zelak, aged 52 years, an employee in the local mills, died of pneumonia yesterday morning at the Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient since Friday. The body was removed to the Zelak home, 310 McConaughy street, Cambria City, yesterday afternoon by Undertaker Baretincle. The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Milka Zelak. Funeral services will be held at St. Nicholas' Serbian Church at 2 o'clock tomorrow after noon with interment in the church cemetery in Middle Taylor Township. ALEX SCOVINSKY. Alex Scovinsky, aged 43 years, of Emmons, near Barnesboro, died Saturday evening at the Spangler Hospital. Death was caused by a complication of diseases. He had been at the hospital about two weeks. The deceased is survived by his widow and several children. The body was turned over to Undertaker M. J. Bacha, of Barnesboro, to prepare for burial. Funeral services were held this afternoon in the Polish Catholic Church at Barnesboro. Interment was in the church cemetery. JOHN SORBER John Sorber, a native of Buckstown, Somerset County, whose health had been impaired for a long time, died yesterday at his home, 407 Hickory street, Seventh Ward, in his 74th year. He had resided in this city for many years. Mr. Sorber is survived by his widow, Mrs. Amanda (Lohr) Sorber; a daughter, Mrs. Edgar Giles, Westmont; three grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Lucinda Stahl, Mrs. George Wentz, Clark Sorber, and Mrs. Edward Rippley, all of this city; Mrs. Samuel Fair, Buckstown, and Harry Sorber, Jeannette. A son died about 10 years ago. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the residence, in charge of the Rev. A. A. Hilleary, pastor of the First Evengelical Church, of which Mr. Sorber was a member. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery. Friends are requested to omit flowers.   Monday Evening, 23 January 1928 Submitted by Patty Millich AGED RESIDENT OF LILLY SUCCUMBS Mrs. John McGraw Called By Death; Funeral At Church On Wednesday Lilly, Jan. 23 -- Mrs. Jemima (George) McGraw, aged 67 years, wife of John McGraw died at her home here at 11:35 o'clock yesterday morning. Death was attributed to a complication of diseases. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon in the local Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. E. F. Brown, pastor. Interment will be in the Lilleydell Cemetery. George Bros., South Fork undertakers have prepared the body for burial. Mrs. McGraw is survived by her husband, and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Alex Robb, Mrs. William Arant, Mrs. Charles Steiger and Fred Steiger and Fred R., David and Albert George, all of Lilly. The deceased was a member of the Ladies' Auxiliary to the Sons of Veterans and the Patriotic Order of Americans.   Tuesday, 24 January 1928 Submitted by Patty Millich FUNERAL OF MRS. JOHN McGRAW. Lilly, Jan. 24 -- Funeral services for Mrs. John McGraw, aged 66 years, whose death occurred at her home here Sunday morning, will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon in the local Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. E. F. Brown. Interment will be in the Lillydell Cemetery. George Bros., South Fork undertakers, will have charge of the funeral. The deceased is survived by her husband (John) and these brothers and sisters: Mrs. Charles Stinger, Mrs. Alex Robb, Mrs. William Arant and Dave, Albert and Fred R. Georgea, all of Lilly. FUNERAL OF MRS. DUNLAP Carrolltown, Jan. 24 -- The funeral of the late Mrs. Magdalen Dunlap, of this town, was conducted at St. Benedict's Church Monday morning at 9 o'clock with the Ladies' Altar Society, of which she was a member, in attendance. Preceding the burial, a solemn high mass of requiem was sung, the Rev. Fathers Thomas Clarence and Raphael, O.S.B., local priests, in the sanctuary. Interment was in the church cemetery. MRS. BESSIE CATON Berlin, Jan. 24 -- Mrs. Bessie Caton, wife of Frank Canton, of Allegheny Township, near here, died suddenly at her ome about 10 o'clock last night. The deceased is survived by her husband and several children. Undertaker J. N. Johnson, of this place, has prepared the body for burial. Funeral services will be ehld at the Caton home on Thursday. Interment will be in the local Odd Fellows' Cemetery. MRS. ROBERT W. LEMON Funeral services for Mrs. Robert W. Lemon, who passed away at her home in the rear of 312 Washington street, Second Ward, yesterday, will be conducted at the Lemon home at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon by the Rev. John Rhys Roberts, pastor of the Westmont Presbyterian Church, with interment in Grandview Cemetery. The deceased was a daughter of John Heidingsfelder of 201 1/2 Vine Street where she was born. [This is a partial obituary.]   26 January 1928 Submitted by Lynne Canterbury FATALY HURT IN MINE AT WEHRUM Harold Nale Badly Squeezed By Machine; Funeral At Carson Valley Vintondale, Jan. 26 -- Harold Nale, aged 24 years, of this place, was instantly killed about 11 o'clock Tuesday night when caught between a rock-dusting machine and timbers in the Bethlehem mine at Wehrum, Indiana County. He was badly crushed. The body was turned over to Undertaker Krumbine, of this place, to prepare for burial. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at Carson Valley, Blair County, where burial will also be made. The deceased is survived by his widow, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. Nale, of Vintondale, and these brothers and sisters: John Nale, of Johnstown; Raymond Nale, of Johnstown; Raymond Nale, of Sprout; Charles and Erma Nale, both at home; Mrs. Ethel Namsley, of Carson Valley; Mrs. Edna Miller, of Vintondale; Mrs. Anna Leap and Mrs. Minnie Lego, both of Tunnelhill; Mrs. Hettie Burkett, of Claysburg; Mrs. Viola Fleck, of Altoona; Mrs. Sadie Clark, of Vintondale, and Mrs. Ella Carnaham, of Cross Keyes. HULDA PENROSE COPLIN. NEW PARIS, June 12. – Mrs. Hulda Penrose Coplin, aged 88 years, died at the home of Albert Penrose, at New Paris, last Saturday morning. She was united in marriage to John Coplin in 1868 and had resided at New Paris ever since her marriage. She was the last to pass away of a large family. Funeral services were held at the home of Albert Penrose at 10 o’clock yesterday morning in charge of the Rev. A. L. Smith. Burial was made in the New Paris Cemetery, in charge of Undertakers J. E. Blackburn and son, of Alum Bank. MRS. ARABELLA LINGENFELTER. June 12. – Mrs. Arabella Lingenfelter, wife of McClain Lingenfelter, died at her home at McKee Saturday afternoon at 4:50 o’clock, death being attributed to complications. She was born at Hyndman, Bedford County, the daughter of Jesse and Elizabeth Burket and was united in marriage with Mr. Lingenfelter 31 years ago. She had resided at McKee for the past 21 years. She is survived by her husband and one sister, Mrs. Malinda Pyles, of Hyndman, and five brothers–George Burket, of Buffalo Mills; Shannon, Brady and Clayton, of Hyndman, and John, of Altoona. She was a member of the United Brethren Church at Hyndman. Funeral services were conducted in the East Freedom United Brethren Church this afternoon. Interment was in the Claysburg Cemetery.   21 Jun 1928 Submitted by Lynne Canterbury CHARLES THEODORE MILLER. Charles Theodore Miller, aged eight months and a half died this morning at the home of his parents, at Nant-y-Glo. MRS. AGNES CEMER. Mrs. Agnes Cemer, aged 78 years, widow of John Cemer, died of a complication of diseases at her home here at 7 o'clock last evening. Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Saturday morning in Sacred Heart Polish Catholic Church, Central City. Burial will be in the church cemetery, in charge of Undertaker J. C. Kepko, of Windber. The deceased is survived by three children: Mary, living in Europe; Michael, at home, and Eva, at Jeannette. ALUM BANK, Dec. 24. – Funeral services for the late William Wa?son Lingenfelter, aged 72 years, who died of pneumonia at his home near here on Friday, were conducted this morning at the Evangelical Church, Alum Bank, the pastor, the Rev. ? Richards, being in charge. Burial took place in the Pleasantville Cemetery. The deceased was a life-long resident of this section. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Margaret (Miller) Lingenfelter, and these children: Ralph, Howard and George Lingenfelter, Mrs. Clara Hayes and Mrs. Vera Musselman, all of Johnstown and Mrs. Mae Bowser, at home. Another daughter, Alice, died nine years ago. Mr. Lingenfelter was a brother of the following: Richard Lingenfelter, of New Paris; El?? Lingenfelter, of Altoona; John Lingenfelter, of Duncansville; Mrs. Ella Grieber, of Duncansville, and Mrs. Eliza Holler, of Manns Choice. Twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.
