East Carroll Township was created on January 5, 1910 from what was formerly Carroll Township. Carroll Township was formed January 1, 1840 from a portion of Susquehanna Township. It was named for Archbishop John Carroll, of Baltimore, Maryland, who was a cousin of Charles Carroll of Carrollton.
