NELLE HUNTER NOTING 100th
Nelle Hunter, a lifelong local resident, is observing her 100th birthday anniversary today. An open-house celebration will be held July 24 at the firehall.
Mrs. Hunter was born July 22, 1888, in a log cabin on a nearby farm, the daughter of John and Sarah Shank. She is a sixth-generation descendant of Christian Shank, founder of Shanksville.
Mrs. Hunter is the widow of Charles Hunter, who died in 1955. There are three children: John, with whom she resides; Joe, Niagara Falls, N.Y.; and Ruth Wilson, Lake Stonycreek. There are three grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hunter was a Sunday school teacher for 50 years at the Shanksville United Methodist Church, where she also served 20 years as a lay director.
According to a family member, she is very alert and reads and writes poetry.
